Weak Links

Deepsea Technologies, Inc. has designed and built Weak Links that can be installed on umbilical lines to facilitate quick disconnection from the Umbilical Termination Assembly (UTA) during an emergency situation or accidental snagging of the umbilical.

A Weak Link mechanism, sometimes called a guillotine, is comprised of a cutting mechanism which is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The actuation mechanism is triggered by an increase in force and is calibrated for a specific load limit. The Weak Link mechanism structure can be designed to mount on the umbilical itself or on stand-alone deployment frame. Deepsea Technologies has designed and manufactured Weak Link systems for cutting umbilicals with protective sheathing as well as individual thermoplastic tubes and has been tested successfully.
